What is sedation dentistry?
At Lifetime Smiles, we understand that many of our patients experience dental anxiety. We are committed to helping you overcome this anxiety to have a pleasant, enjoyable dental experience. Sedation dentistry in Escondido, California is used to produce feelings of calm and relaxation while you are in the dental chair. Dr. Rabee McDonald & Dr. Christo Mallakis, our skilled dentists, offers two types of sedation dentistry:
- Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
- Oral sedation
What is nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a gas that you inhale during your dental treatment. It is often referred to as laughing gas for its pleasurable, euphoric effect. When using nitrous oxide, a small mask or tubing system will be placed over your nose. As you inhale and exhale the nitrous oxide, mixed with a larger portion of oxygen for safety, you will almost immediately begin to feel it working. Nitrous oxide is safe and effective, and the effects wear off within minutes of the end of the treatment.
What is oral sedation?
Oral sedation is a medication you take by mouth prior to your dental visit. It will produce feelings of calm and relaxation, allowing us to complete your treatments in a shorter amount of time. Both oral sedation and nitrous oxide are forms of conscious sedation. This means that while you have reduced anxiety and relaxed feelings, you will not fall asleep. You are able to remain in control of your faculties and carry on a conversation with our dental team. We provide sedation dentistry to help you receive the care and attention you deserve at Lifetime Smiles.
